Sea bass producer Avramar España announced yesterday that it has signed a strategic agreement with the specialized premium seafood distributor Antonio de Miguel for the commercialization of its flagship product, Corvina REX, in the HORECA channel.
The partnership between these two leading companies in the seafood sector in Spain will allow Avramar España to expand the presence of Corvina REX - its main product in the country - in Spanish restaurants, "guaranteeing to the professionals of the sector a fish of the highest quality and with all the guarantees of freshness, food safety and sustainability that characterize both companies."
Commenting on the agreement, Avramar España's Commercial Director, David Algarra, said it reinforces their commitment to excellence and innovation within the aquaculture sector. "With Antonio de Miguel's help, we will bring a tasty, versatile, and healthy product such as Corvina REX, ideal for haute cuisine, to its wide clientele," he added.
Leader in sea bass farming for more than 15 years, the company said Corvina REX is a product defined by its delicate flavor, firm flesh, and endless culinary possibilities, but also by its high protein and omega-3 fatty acid content. "All this makes it a perfect choice for the menus of the most demanding restaurants and hotels," Avramar España claimed.
Its new partner spoke along the same lines. "Incorporating this great reference to our portfolio is another step forward in our mission to offer the customer the best seafood products, with a service adapted to the needs of the HORECA channel," David Sánchez, Purchasing Manager of Antonio de Miguel, said for his part.
This commercial boost is a further step in Avramar España's efforts to stabilize its situation. It should be recalled that the company has added 'España' to its name after undergoing a major restructuring in response to the difficult economic conditions suffered last year, which led it to split its operations in Greece and Spain to be treated as two different companies.
As WeAreAquaculture reported, the then-largest aquaculture producer in the Mediterranean with headquarters in Valencia and operations in both Spain and Greece, managed to secure a lifeline for its Spanish division - Avramar Ibérica - by renegotiating its debt with the majority of its creditors in May of last year.
At the same time, the then owners of Avramar Group - the investment funds Amerra and Mubadala - began actively exploring the sale of the Greek operations, which accounted for approximately 70% of their total production. That sale finally materialized in January this year, when the Dubai-based aquaculture company Aqua Bridge Group officially announced its acquisition.
For its part, Antonio de Miguel, which currently has a network of more than 40 professionals throughout Spain, started with the seafood project in 2019 and in just 6 years already markets more than 200 tons per year from its new facilities in Madrid, which exceed 10,000 m2.
Although announced today, the collaboration between the two companies has already had its coming out with the participation of Avramar España in an event organized by the specialized distributor and aimed at its sales network, which was attended by part of the team of chef Ángel León, from the three-Michelin-star restaurant Aponiente, and Corvina REX's brand ambassador.
Nicknamed "the Chef of the Sea," Ángel León is known worldwide for his commitment to ocean conservation and management through research into new ingredients that reduce fishing pressure and promote sustainable fishing.
Led by its head chef, Alan Iglesias, in addition to offering various dishes made with Avramar España's flagship product, in the framework of the event organized by Antonio de Miguel, the Aponiente team made a complete quartering to show the full use that Corvina REX offers, explaining which parts of the fish are most suitable for each type of preparation, thus showing its possibilities in the HORECA channel.
It was precisely this possibility of taking full advantage of the fish that Taniche Lacomba, Country Manager of Spain at Avramar, highlighted when the collaboration between Avramar and "the Chef of the Sea" was presented two years ago at the Seafood Expo Global in Barcelona.
"I can't imagine a better brand ambassador than Ángel León, with whom we share fundamental values, such as a commitment to sustainability and a passion and respect for the sea. We are also united by his open-mindedness when it comes to making the most of fish, valuing all its parts, and minimizing food waste," he then said.
