Aqualoop, the offshore fish farming company known for its Aqualoop Big Dipper design, has new major investors, the Icelandic seafood consultancy, Markó Partners. This union would mark the beginning of offshore salmon farming in Iceland.

Aqualoop has developed sustainable solutions for offshore aquaculture. The Aqualoop Big Dipper HS16, its flagship, can be used for farming in all oceans regardless of their characteristics. However, it has focused on Atlantic salmon farming, for which it estimates a total production of up to 20,000 tons.

The company is currently working on obtaining permits to operate aquaculture at sea in several strategic areas outside Norway. There are many countries that have similar prerequisites for offshore aquaculture as Norway, so adaptation, a priori, may be straightforward.

This project has attracted new investors to Aqualoop, including the Iceland company Markó Partners, which sits on Aqualoop's board of directors. The two companies are also investing together in Icelandic Offshore Salmon, which would be Iceland's first marine farmer.

"We follow the work to facilitate offshore aquaculture in Norway, but at the same time, we have been clear that we will address offshore aquaculture internationally. That is why I am extremely pleased that Icelandic Markó Partners with Kjartan Olafsson at the helm is joining the ownership side of Aqualoop and that Kjartan is joining as a new board member", said Håvard Wollan, chairman of Aqualoop, to Norwegian digital paper iLaks.

Both told to ILaks that they were excited about the step they were taking and that this is only the beginning of a more sustainable and profitable aquaculture of fish farming.
