The first edition of the Alternative Proteins in Aquaculture Innovation Summit (APAIS 2026) is set to take place at Universiti Malaya in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on 8-9 September 2026, with participants able to attend both on-site and online.
Co-organised by the Faculty of Science at Universiti Malaya and Mandible Agritech, a tech start-up focused on sustainable aquaculture, the scientific and professional event will explore the role of alternative proteins as replacements for fishmeal in aquaculture nutrition.
“The South-East Asian aquaculture sector is expanding quickly, and we clearly see a need for the emergence of alternatives to fishmeal for farmed fish nutrition,” the organisers said. “We believe that aquaculture cannot develop at the expense of wild fish stocks and the populations relying on them to survive. Moreover, fishmeal costs are soaring. Developing local and sustainable alternatives is therefore necessary."
“That’s why we decided to launch the Alternative Proteins in Aquaculture Innovation Summit: to gather professionals from diverse backgrounds and accelerate the emergence of solutions.”
APAIS 2026 will run over two full days and will include invited speaker and sponsor presentations, a panel discussion, a workshop session, networking opportunities, and a half-day experimental farm visit.
The event is aimed at fish farming specialists, aquafeed manufacturers, researchers, government officials, and producers of alternative proteins such as insects, yeasts and microalgae.
The Asian Food & Feed Insect Association has already confirmed its partnership with the summit, while organisers said additional sponsorship opportunities remain available.
