Today marks the opening of this year's Aquaculture Africa conference, which is being held in Lusaka, Zambia.

With the theme "Resilient value chains in the blue economy", AFRAQ23 features a range of speakers covering research and development in the African aquaculture sector, in addition to significant industry participation.

According to the conference organizers, AFRAQ23 will particularly feature "lessons learnt from Zambia on how the country has managed to weather through many storms, including the recent COVID-19 pandemic to remain one of the fastest growing aquaculture producer countries in Africa".

Focus on resilience, with lessons learned from Zambia's aquaculture sector

Amongst the conference highlights is a keynote presentation by Fisho Patrick Mwale, Founder and CEO of bream farmer Yalelo as well as Chairman of the Aquaculture Development Association of Zambia.

Mwale is due to present a case study of Yalelo, which was founded in 2011 and is now one of Sub-Saharan Africa’s largest integrated fish farming operations, producing 15,000 metric tonnes. Yalelo has also recently partnered with Aller Aqua in setting up the largest fish feed company in Zambia, which is also one of the largest in Africa.

The conference includes an international trade exhibition, industry forums, student sessions and activities, satellite workshops and training sessions, as well as various other meetings and forums on aquaculture development in Zambia and Africa more broadly.
