The I National Fisheries Congress in Spain, held on December 16 in Madrid, focused on the main themes of technological innovation and sustainability in the sector, strengthening collaboration among all stakeholders, and adapting to a more informed and demanding consumer.
This event, organized by the Association of National Fisheries Producer Organizations in Spain, Pesca España (Fisheries Spain), brought together over 150 representatives from institutions, organizations, companies, scientists, and experts.
"The Spanish fishing sector is a benchmark in sustainability, innovation, and the care of our fishing grounds, an economic engine for our coastal areas, and at the same time, an ancient profession that represents tradition, identity, and heritage," said Isabel Artime, Secretary General of Fisheries at the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food.
The discussions focused on excellence in fisheries management and bringing seafood closer to daily diets to promote healthy and sustainable habits.
Additionally, the impact of the National Food Strategy on Spanish fisheries was debated, and a live show cooking session was held, along with the presentation of tools and ideas to bring fish closer to consumers and strengthen its visibility in society.
The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food, Luis Planas, closed the event and presented the 1st Pesca España Awards to Ángel León, the 'chef of the sea,' and to Gema Hassen-Bey, Paralympic fencer, for promoting healthy lifestyle habits.
Finally, Planas emphasized the importance of addressing the generational challenge, ·since we must bring young people into a sector as demanding and dangerous as fishing, and offer them opportunities to develop their professional lives here."
