Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute (ASMI) has published the results of the 2026 Economic Value of Alaska's Seafood Industry report, highlighting that the industry supported more than 41,800 jobs and generated $5.2 billion in economic activity across the state.
Alaska's seafood industry harvested 2.313 billion kilograms of seafood, generating a final value of $4.2 billion through processing and distribution. The sector also supported more than 41,800 direct jobs and generated $1.9 billion in labor income across the state.
"Seafood continues to be one of Alaska's most important economic drivers, contributing about 7% to Alaska's GDP," said Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute Executive Director Jeremy Woodrow.
Moreover, Alaska's seafood industry remains essential to local communities, with 10,900 resident fishermen participating in the sector and more than $125 million contributed in taxes and fees in 2024.
"While the past few years have brought real challenges for fishermen, processors, and coastal communities, the latest economic report shows that Alaska seafood remains a foundational industry that supports jobs, businesses, economies, and communities across Alaska," clarified Woodrow.
The report analyzes data from 2023 and 2024, during which Alaska seafood recorded its lowest ex-vessel value since 2000. The ex-vessel value refers to the value of fish or seafood at the moment it is unloaded from the vessel, before any processing, transportation, or wholesale distribution.
This was compounded by a combination of global market pressures and changes in supply conditions, which unexpectedly did not affect the industry’s resilience, particularly for Alaska's coastal communities.
“Alaska's wild fisheries are resilient and among the best managed in the world, and the Alaska Seafood brand remains highly trusted by consumers. There are many positive indicators in the global market, and Alaska seafood is well-positioned to regain momentum," he concluded.
