Mystery unveiled

Yesterday we learned that The Kingfish Company was looking for a new CEO after Christo du Plessis announced he was stepping down to take a new chief executive officer position with another still unknown company. Today the mystery has been unraveled when Matorka has announced that du Plessis has been appointed as the company's new CEO. If there are no further news in this regard, the change will be effective in May 2022.

"I am excited to join the team which provides a unique opportunity to combine my 15 years of experience in land-based farming with the substantial potential of Matorka. I believe there is substantial value to be unlocked by combining the potential of Arctic Char with Matorka's expansion opportunity, unique location, experienced team and committed shareholders", says Christo in the Icelandic company's statement on LinkedIn.

Previous scale-up experience

Nowadays, Matorka is operating a 3,000mt land-based hatchery and grow-out facility, but preparing for expanding to 10,000mt in Grindavik, Iceland. For this reason, the company highlights Christo du Plessis' previous experience at The Kingfish Company, noting that, during his tenure, the Dutch achieved sector-leading productivity results and tripled its production capacity.

"It is with pleasure that I welcome Christo to Matorka's strong management team. His scale-up experience is instrumental to Matorka's plans to become the largest supplier of sustainably raised Arctic Char delicacy worldwide", said Bjarni K. Thorvardarson director and Matorka's interim CEO.
