Arctic char farmer Matorka has reported via a LinkedIn post that its broodstock development program is progressing successfully. According to the report, this new facility has already helped secure two groups of future breeders.

The Icelandic company explained that the first batch of eggs arrived in 2023 and that by using high-quality genetic material from Hólar University, it has ensured a year-round supply of eggs, utilizing environmental cues to encourage off-season spawning.

Several hundred fish are already at Matorka's facilities in Fellsmúli, and the oldest ones are approaching three years of age and weigh up to 5 kg. The first spawning is expected to occur soon.

Matorka's goal is to build a larger breeding facility to produce fingerlings, thereby increasing capacity and activity. "This is another step in our ongoing commitment to quality, sustainability, and meeting the needs of seafood lovers everywhere," the publication reads.

In addition, CEO Christo du Plessis commented: "I am very proud of the work Neil Stallard, Jóhanna Hlöðversdóttir, and the rest of the Fellsmúli team have done to get us to this stage with our broodstock."
