Urchinomics, Bellona, Bright Tide, SeaForester, Oyster Heaven, and the Sea Ranger Service, have partnered with Nestlé Purina PetCare Europe to help restore 1,500 hectares of marine habitats by 2030.
Purina Europe's first Ocean Restoration Programme will have two phases. First, the programme will develop research, a measurement framework and the conditions to scale up the restoration solutions efficiently.
Then, the second phase to start in 2026 will focus on scaling the proven solutions. Thanks to all partners, science and methodologies in marine habitat restoration will have a push-up.
For example, Oyster Heaven uses natural materials to reconstruct lost oyster reefs and Urchinomics removes excess sea urchins which helps turn a barren seafloor back into a kelp forest.
Kerstin Schmeiduch, Director of Corporate Communications and Sustainability at Purina Europe, says in a press release: "We are delighted to launch Purina Europe´s first Ocean Restoration Programme. With marine biodiversity declining dramatically, collective restoration efforts are required."
In addition, Brian Tsuyoshi Takeda, founder of Urchinomics, published in his LinkedIn profile: "This has the potential to serve as a catalyst and accelerator for significant restorative action that prioritizes biodiversity, carbon sequestration, and local communities."
