The Indian ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) celebrated National Fish Farmers' Day on July 10, 2025, with events and training programs at its headquarters in Kochi and other regional centers.
The hands-on training program on fish feed production technology lasted for three days and was aimed at the beneficiaries of the Scheduled Caste Sub Plan (SCSP) scheme.
According to the Director of ICAR-CMFRI, Grinson George, who inaugurated the session, this initiative aims to empower participants with practical knowledge and skills in sustainable fish feed formulation and production, especially in cage farming and the bio-floc system.
Similarly, the Karwar Regional Station held an event with scientists, fishermen, and stakeholders from the marine fisheries sector. The Joint Director of Fisheries of the Government of Karnataka, Ravindra Talekar, congratulated two farmers for their outstanding contributions to promoting integrated coastal cage farming in the Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka.
Moreover, at the Veraval Regional Station, tribute was paid to Vijayaben Rathod, the CEO of the Fish Farmers Producer Organization (Mariculture). This organization is the first of its kind in India, dedicated to mariculture and is composed entirely (100%) of Scheduled Caste beneficiaries, with over 450 members.
Lastly, the Visakhapatnam Regional Centre of ICAR-CMFRI honored a total of 25 fishermen from the districts of Andhra Pradesh, who shared their experiences and achievements. Dr. Devika Pillai, Assistant Director General of ICAR, was the chief guest at the event.
The CMFRI is part of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and was established in 1947. It is dedicated to research in marine fisheries and aquaculture, to ensure the sustainability of the country’s marine resources and to improve the livelihoods of coastal communities.
