Lerøy Seafood Group will introduce chicken by-products as an ingredient in fish feed with the help of its feed supplier EWOS. This decision aligns with their circular economy philosophy, which helps reduce the carbon footprint and environmental impact of Norwegian salmon production.
"To achieve our ambitious goal of a 46% reduction in climate emissions by 2030, we must intensify our efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from feed," advanced the Head of ESG and Quality at Lerøy Seafood Group, Anne Hilde Midttveit.
EWOS confirms that its raw materials have been tested, yielding good results for both fish health and product quality. Additionally, Lerøy has an extensive monitoring program that tracks the process from suppliers to the finished product.
The Norwegian seafood group has confirmed that the start of production of feed with chicken will begin in the spring of 2025. At the moment, product testing and supplier screening are being conducted.
"Chicken meal increases the supply of good and nutritious feed ingredients that are well suited to fish. We look forward to working closely with our customers and other industry players to ensure that we together exploit the opportunities that are now opening up for our industry," explained the Sales Director at Cargill Lise Andreasen.
According to Midttveit, salmon is among the world's most environmentally friendly protein sources and with this initiative, Lerøy makes an effort to create a more efficient and sustainable seafood value chain.
