Icelandic seafood company Samherji has acquired a 49% stake in Norwegian fish oil producer Berg LipidTech AS, based in Ålesund, which produces, among other products, fish oil and other oils from cod, saithe, salmon, tuna, and anchovies.
This move strengthens Samherji's role as a leading processor of by-products and supports the stability of Berg LipidTech's supply of high-quality raw materials. At the same time, Samherji holds the right to a call option on the remaining share capital of the company.
"We believe that Berg LipidTech has room for significant growth, as the company has state-of-the-art production facilities and experienced and talented employees with whom we look forward to working together," confirmed CEO of Samherji, Baldvin Þorsteinsson.
In June 2025, Thorsteinsson assumed the role of CEO, following his father Thorsteinn Már Baldvinsson's decision in May to step down after holding the position for 42 years.
Berg LipidTech will continue to retain its owners and management team, and its facilities will remain unchanged. Samherji, for its part, will appoint members to the board of directors and take part in the company's management decisions.
"Samherji is a strong and experienced company in the fisheries sector. The company's access to important raw materials will ensure us with vertical integration that is not typical for companies in our industry. This partnership will create new opportunities for continued growth and development," said CEO of Berg LipidTech, Ståle Berg.
