The international roll-out of MarinTrust’s updated Factory Standard Version 3 continues to advance, with adoption of the standard in Peru, one of the most important global producers of marine ingredients.
The marine ingredient certification body announced this week that Peruvian certification body SGS del Perú has now officially extended its accreditation scope to conduct audits and certifications under the new MarinTrust standard. The move was approved by Peru’s national accreditation body Instituto Nacional de Calidad (INACAL), and marks a significant development in the international expansion of the certification programme, MarinTrust said.
Originally launched in May 2024, MarinTrust’s Factory Standard Version 3 aims to uphold rigorous standards of responsibility, traceability, and transparency in the production of marine ingredients. SGS del Peru’s newly acquired capability to audit under the updated standard ensures the certification is aligned with international norms, as it operates under ISO/IEC 17065, a key benchmark for certifying bodies.
"For SGS Peru, this scope update represents a key strategic step in our commitment to offering certification services aligned with the highest international standards," said Adriana Cardenal Ilas, Business Manager Cluster Perú & Ecuador, SGS del Perú SAC, in a MarinTrust press release.
"The inclusion of MarinTrust Version 3 under our ISO/IEC 17065 accreditation, approved by INACAL, strengthens our ability to provide rigorous, impartial, and technically competent assessments to the marine ingredient industry. This advancement not only brings confidence to international markets but also contributes to strengthening a more responsible, traceable, and transparent supply chain for certified marine ingredients," she added.
Francisco Aldon, CEO of MarinTrust, described the scope extension as "a pivotal phase" for the continuing roll-out of the standard, and said it was "the result of a rigorous development and stakeholder process, and reinforces its credibility and integrity".
"By providing marine ingredients producers and users with certainty and traceability in their products, MarinTrust’s Factory Standard Version 3 is critical in ensuring the continuing responsible development of the industry," Aldon added.
Introduced on 1 May 2024, the MarinTrust Factory Standard Version 3 aims to establish fully traceable marine ingredients and enhances the standard's emphasis on environmental and social impacts at both the production facilities and the fishing vessels.
The update is designed to increase the accessibility of responsibly sourced marine ingredients and promote the use of by-products, the organization said when launching the updated standard last year.
Approximately 45% of marine ingredients worldwide are currently certified against MarinTrust standards, according to the organization, with 182 sites in 31 different countries successfully audited to comply with the MarinTrust Standard as of May 2025, including 23 sites in Peru.
