Peru increases its second season anchovy quota

The new quota, which amounts to 1,630,000 metric tonnes, is much higher than the provisional figure announced on November 1.

Peruvian authorities have significantly increased the quota for the second fishing season in the North-Centre of Peru —which began on November 7, 2025— to 1,630,000 metric tonnes.

According to IFFO, The Marine Ingredients Organisation, this quota it is much higher than the provisional quota and is based on scientific studies. It should also be noted that this fishery produces around 20% of the world's fishmeal each year.

"The biological survey completed a few days ago places the quota in line with the one granted for the last quarter in 2023 but below the one authorised in quarter IV 2024. Our projections for the 2025 global production remain at 5.6 million tons of fishmeal and 1.2-1.3 million tons of fish oil," detailed Dr Enrico Bachis, IFFO's Market Research Director.

Similarly, IFFO reports that cumulative annual fishmeal production by September 2025 increased by approximately 8% compared to the same period in 2024, driven by higher output in most regions.

Furthermore, cumulative fish oil production increased year-on-year by approximately 6%. Most countries recorded positive trends compared to January–September 2024, with the exception of Spain and Peru.

Finally, IFFO refers to China, where fishmeal use in aquaculture in 2025 has exceeded last year’s, thanks to better performance-to-price ratios. However, fishmeal and fish oil production in 2025 is expected to decline compared to 2024 due to rising production costs.

In October, IFFO celebrated its annual conference—held for the first time in Tokyo, Japan—addressed trends in the supply and demand of these ingredients and developments in the wider value chain.
