The Secretary General of Fisheries, Isabel Artime, has highlighted Spain's commitment to ensure decent work for fishermen, minimum safety conditions on board vessels, and common rules for all states involved in fishing activities.

Organized by the Fresh Fish Producers Organization of the Port and Ría of Marín (Opromar), 'The application of Convention 188 of the International Labor Organization after its ratification by Spain' seminar, was celebrated yesterday.

During her participation, Artime discussed the aspects of the convention and its implementation in Spain. She also addressed the fishing work certificates required for certain vessels.

The convention is based on adopting measures concerning occupational safety and health, social security and medical care, accommodation, food, and rest periods.

Additionally, it regulates the minimum age for working and provides a safety framework for protection in case of illness or work-related deaths. Furthermore, this will help with generational renewal and encourage young people to enter into the sector.

Precisely, the Association of National Fisheries Producer Organizations in Spain, Pesca España, presented in mid May an immersive experience destined to be launched in schools to promote fishing professions to young children.

Finally, the convention has been signed by other 21 countries and seeks to equalize the conditions of workers engaged in this activity.
