To celebrate World Fisheries Day, the national Producers' Organizations Association, Pesca España, wanted to highlight the role played by people of the sea in building a sustainable, innovative sector committed to the future of the oceans.

The association also wants to remind everyone of the economic, social, and environmental importance of fishing in Spain, which helps create jobs and develop coastal communities, always with an eye on protecting the marine environment.

"Men and women who dedicate their lives to the sea, who take risks, and who, through their effort, uphold a tradition that forms part of our country’s identity. Thanks to their commitment, fishing continues to provide employment, food, and a future for thousands of families," said Antonio Nieto, manager of Pesca España.

Fishing in Spain provides jobs for more than 66,000 people, contributes nearly 1% of the national GDP, and can exceed 30% of municipal GDP in some coastal towns. The sector also operates more than 8,600 vessels and generates over 2 billion euros per year.

Finally, Pesca España advocates for incorporating more efficient and comfortable vessels and making the activity more viable to attract young people and encourage generational renewal.

Precisely in March, the association participated in the AULA fair during Education Week 2025, held in Madrid, to bring the world of fishing closer to young talent.

"Taking care of the sea is taking care of our future. At Pesca España, we work to show that it is possible to make fishing compatible with conservation—and that this is the path to continue providing food, employment, and a future to thousands of families," concluded Nieto.
