Smögenlax Aquaculture AB
Smögenlax Aquaculture AB has finally obtained the environmental permit to cultivate approximately 6,000 tons of Atlantic salmon per year. The Swedish company only had this obstacle left to overcome in order to make its project a reality.
"Smögenlax will produce world-class Swedish salmon intended for the Swedish market. In Sweden, we consume about 50,000 tons annually, so our contribution will be significant when it comes to domestic production, not least for emergency purposes," explained Chairman of Smögenlax Joel Oresten.
The cultivation facility will be built in the circular economy park of Kungshamn, a town famous for its fishing industry. In this park, energy, water, and waste products, among other components, are recycled.
Thanks to the location, the need for transportation will be minimal, as well as energy production achieved through collaboration with local food companies located in the same Renahav park.
In 2024, the supplier of packaging, components, and insulation solutions BEWI confirmed it will open a new circular hub in Norrköping, Sweden that will allow the company to expand its EPS (expanded polystyrene) recycling capacity by 40%.
"With the circular hub in Norrköping, we enhance our recycling platform, expand our product offering, and strengthen our market position," stated the CEO of BEWI Christian Bekken.
Furthermore, Swedish food-tech company Big Akwa announced the opening of a new investment round to support the continued development of its land-based aquaculture facility at Alby Industrial Park in mid-Sweden, contributing to the company’s vision of circular and resource-efficient food production.
