NovaNam, a subsidiary of the Nueva Pescanova Group in Namibia, has renewed the FISH Standard for Crew certification, a distinction it first obtained in 2022, becoming the first fishing company in the world to achieve it.
This international certification, based on four principles and 28 criteria that ensure the proper implementation of international conventions, recognizes safe, fair, and ethical working practices on board its fishing vessels.
The Nueva Pescanova Group has been operating in Namibia for more than 35 years, employing around 2,500 people. It is based in the ports of Lüderitz and Walvis Bay, and operates a fleet consisting of two freezer trawlers and five fresh fish vessels.
"This certification recognizes NovaNam's ongoing efforts to provide our crews with decent, safe working conditions aligned with international standards, while also making a significant contribution to the fishing industry and the economy of Namibia," said NovaNam Country Manager, Edwin Kamatoto.
Additionally, Chief Executive of FISH Standard for Crew, Mike Kraft, stated: "Programs like FISH can serve as a credible independent verification tool that organizations can use to demonstrate their leadership, the high value they place on the safety and well-being of their workers, and the transparency of their operations."
NovaNam is the only fishing company in Namibia—and currently in Africa—to hold this certification, which it renewed after a rigorous independent audit of its fleet, organization, and crew.
