The new packaging uses up to 71% FSC™-certified paper.
Tetra Pak
The Swedish-Swiss company Tetra Pak, specialized in food packaging and processing solutions, has introduced the industry's first carton packaging for shelf-stable tuna.
This milestone has been achieved with the support of the Spanish company Jealsa, a key industrial partner that has been involved in the development and validation of the product.
The product was packaged in Tetra Recart® and launched last month in Sweden with the retailer Axfood in a 200 ml mini format. This packaging has a carbon footprint that is 85% lower than steel cans and 83% lower than glass jars. In addition, it uses up to 71% FSC™-certified paper.
"With the industry's first carton packaging for shelf-stable tuna in Tetra Recart, we are giving producers and brands a new way to stand out on the shelf, protect and grow their market share, modernize with a paper-based alternative to cans, and contribute to more sustainable food systems," assured Tatiana Liceti, Executive Vice President of Packaging Solutions at Tetra Pak.
Moreover, Jesús M. Alonso Escurís, President of Jealsa, said: "Thanks to our collaboration with Tetra Pak, we have brought to market an innovative solution that combines modern packaging formats with our long-standing expertise in seafood products."
Finally, the shape of Tetra Recart® provides strength and makes storage and pick & pack operations easier, making it especially suitable for e-commerce, home delivery, and meal kits.
