UK supermarket Co-op has announced plans to ensure that 100% of its own-brand fresh and frozen farmed seafood carries Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) certification by 2027, as part of its wider efforts to improve transparency and responsible sourcing across its supply chain.
Co-op’s first ASC-certified product, its own-brand fresh seabass, has now reached stores, the company confirmed. The remaining 18 lines in its standard range, including smoked salmon and whole prawns, are expected to complete the move to ASC certification within the next 15 months.
The Co-op said the move builds on its existing ecolabel certification credentials through its support for the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) for wild-caught seafood and RSPCA Assured certification for its premium Scottish salmon.
“Offering high-quality, sustainably sourced seafood on our shelves is at the heart of our commitment as a responsible retailer,” said Sam Darley, Fisheries and Agriculture Compliance Manager at Co-op, via a press release.
“Moving 100% of our farmed fish to ASC by 2027 reflects the rigorous standards we have upheld since 2008, ensuring all seafood is sourced from well-managed farms and fisheries whilst minimising our impact on the marine environment," Darley added.
Lief Hendrikz, Market Development Manager UK & Ireland for ASC, congratulated Co-op for its "leadership in responsible sourcing."
“Moving to 100% ASC-certified farmed seafood is great news for shoppers who want to choose change and support responsible aquaculture. Retailers play a vital role in driving positive progress, and Co-op’s move will help make responsibly farmed seafood more widely available across the UK," he added.
