Live fish carrier to use a NES battery package for the first time

Rocio Álvarez Jiménez

Norway-based shipowner and operator AquaShip/Intership has hired Norwegian Electric Systems AS (NES) services to deliver a deck-based battery energy storage system to its Grip Explorer wellboat, which has been converted from an offshore supply vessel to a 3,500 m3 live fish carrier.

Therefore, NES, a subsidiary of HAV Group ASA, will provide a containerized energy storage system with a 'Quest' battery charger with 1,250 kW capacity. Also, it will help with the installation of the deck-based system.

The Managing Director of NES Siv Remøy-Vangen has confirmed that this is the first time they are installing this system onboard a live fish carrier: "It reflects the aquaculture industry's increased focus on energy-efficient marine operations as an enabler to reduce both operating costs and emissions."

The specialist in sustainable energy design and smart control will deliver the equipment in 2024 and will manage the project from its headquarters in Bergen.

On the other hand, representatives at AquaShip underlined the benefits of installing the NES battery package for example reducing emissions, higher operational reliability, and improving crew working conditions.
