Norway invests €8.5M in world's first maritime AI research centre

The Norwegian Maritime AI Centre will be granted status as a national research centre for applied artificial intelligence (AI) in the maritime sector.

The Ministry of Fisheries and the Oceans has announced that the Norwegian Maritime Artificial Intelligence (AI) Centre will receive a total of 100 million Norwegian kroner (around €8.5 million) over five years to revolutionize the maritime industries.

In this way, the Norwegian Centre will gain the status of a national research centre for artificial intelligence applied to the maritime sector, becoming the world's first maritime research centre dedicated to this technology.

"Congratulations to the Norwegian Maritime AI Centre and to all Norwegian maritime actors who now have access to world-leading knowledge," expressed Minister of Fisheries and the Oceans Marianne Sivertsen Næss.

The centre will be led by the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and has received support from various actors in the business sector, academia, the public sector, and international partners. Norway already has six national research centres for AI that strengthen research across various sectors.

Regarding this, the Minister of Research and Higher Education, Sigrun Aasland, said: "We will ensure our maritime industry has access to the best and most up-to-date knowledge within a rapidly developing field."

Additionally, the CEO of the Research Council of Norway, Mari Sundli Tveit, indicated: "Norwegian maritime players will now be able to participate in the international research front and gain access to the best and most up-to-date knowledge about technology and innovation within artificial intelligence."
