AquaBioTech Group (ABTG) has announced the appointment of Anton J. Buttigieg as the new non-executive Chairman of its Board of Directors. The aquaculture, fisheries, and marine consulting and development firm said he will bring new depth and perspective to the Board and strengthen its internal governance, as well as its executive team that is aggressively seeking new projects in Asia, Africa and other regions.
A global leader in aquaculture technology and services, although headquartered in Malta, AquaBioTech operates internationally in more than sixty countries with projects in places as diverse as Norway, Brunei, Oman, and Japan. In its statement, the company emphasized that this appointment is a key part of its continued international expansion plans for its land-based fish farming technology.
Bringing experience and contacts to the position
Regarding the background of its new Chairman of the Board, AquaBioTech stated that Buttigieg is an international trade and export development specialist with over fifteen years of leadership experience.
During that time, among other positions, he served for four years, including two as Vice President, on the Board of Trade Promotion Europe, a non-profit association of European, national, and regional trade and agrifood promotion organizations that works to strengthen European trade through improved coordination and information sharing.
Subsequently, for more than ten years, Anton J. Buttigieg was also the founding Chief Executive Officer of Trade Malta. In that role, he supported hundreds of Malta-based companies in their international expansion through financial incentives, market intelligence, trade missions, and participation in major global trade fairs.
As CEO of Trade Malta, Buttigieg led high-level delegations to Africa, the Middle East and Asia, often alongside senior government leaders, and, as ABTG highlighted, with this tenure, he now brings a wealth of experience and contacts to his new position.
"We are all delighted to have Anton join and lead the Board of Directors as our new Chairman as we have witnessed first-hand his hard work with Trade Malta over the years," said AquaBioTech Group CEO, Shane A. Hunter.
"As an export orientated business with clients and projects in more than sixty countries, we welcome his experience to the team and his oversight as we continue our international expansion," he added.
For his part, the new non-executive Chairman of the Board said that, having worked closely with companies pursuing international growth for many years, he recognised the unique global potential of AquaBioTech Group.
"The company has established itself as a global leader in innovative aquaculture solutions, combining scientific excellence with practical, scalable technologies that are making a real impact worldwide," Buttigieg stated.
"I am delighted to support the Board and executive team as we strengthen our presence across Asia, Africa, and other key regions, delivering solutions that meet the world's growing demand for sustainable seafood," he concluded.
