Ethical Seafood Research (ESR)—a non-profit organization advocating for improved animal welfare in aquatic food systems globally—has announced the appointment of Jacqui Greeff as its new Managing Director.
According to ESR, its new leader is a professional specializing in management, marketing and strategy, with a long track record in the private sector, as well as a prominent involvement in the development of health and education.
Greeff has worked in multiple markets, taking on responsibilities in team leadership, strategy, campaign management, impact measurement frameworks and organizational systems, but, in addition, she is a qualified researcher and previously led two research consultancies.
As she herself revealed in a brief interview that the organization has shared on LinkedIn, her career encompasses strategy, research, impact management, marketing, business leadership and international development, but she also does it with an added bonus: a strong focus on Africa.
Registered in the UK, Spain, and Kenya, ESR focus on improving conditions for farmed fish in low- and middle-income countries, where aquaculture is rapidly expanding, and animal welfare is often overlooked. With several tilapia welfare projects underway in Africa, this experience is undoubtedly a valuable asset for the organization.
"My board experience also gives me a solid grounding in governance and organisational oversight," Greeff stated. "This role lets me put my business management qualifications to direct use in service of a cause I care deeply about."
Commenting on her motivation for joining Ethical Seafood Research, Jacqui Greeff said it was the combination of rigorous science with practical solutions that benefit both animals and people.
"Given the sheer scale of global fish farming, the potential for impact is enormous, and the managing director role is a strong fit with both my personal impact ambitions and the skills I bring," she said.
ESR's new Managing Director also said that, regarding her new position, she is inspired by the fact that the organization's work is based on research and evidence, always keeping the welfare of aquatic animals at the center of everything they do.
"I'm equally inspired by the genuine inclusion and empowerment of local communities through effective training, and by the real policy gains already achieved through sustained sector engagement and partnerships," Greeff added.
Of her new team, she confessed that she has been deeply impressed by the passion and commitment of the researchers, aquaculture specialists, and animal welfare experts at ESR. "Their dedication gives me real conviction that we are heading towards increasingly positive outcomes for fish and the communities who depend on them," she commented.
Finally, Jacqui Greeff stated that her priority after her appointment is to create the right environment for that talented team to do their best work for aquatic animals and the ecosystems they depend on.
"From there, we will take the next strong steps to scale our highest-impact solutions for fish and communities. Farmed fish welfare is reaching a critical juncture in the global conversation, and ESR's geographic scope, network and research put us in a distinctive position to contribute to a better future," she concluded.
