Spain appoints new General Director for Sustainable Fisheries

After the proposal of Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Luis Planas, Spain's Council of Ministers yesterday approved the appointment of Ramón de la Figuera Morales as the new General Director of Sustainable Fisheries.

Among other functions, the Directorate General for Sustainable Fisheries is in charge of exercising the competencies in the field of maritime fishing both in the Spanish national fishing grounds and in the European Union waters.

In addition, among its tasks is also the coordination of the activities related to the EU common fisheries policy on fishing resources, as well as the regulation of recreational maritime fishing in external waters.

Before joining his new position, De la Figuera held since 2019 the role of Fisheries Counselor of the Permanent Representation of Spain to the European Union.

Previously, he was in charge of the Subdirectorate General of National Fishing Grounds, Community Waters and Aquaculture, and the Subdirectorate General of Regional Fisheries Agreements and Organizations.

Born in Madrid in 1982, Ramón de la Figuera Morales, who replaces Mónica Corrales, is a veterinarian from the Complutense University of Madrid and holds a master's degree in Evolutionary Biology from the same university.

In 2006 he joined, by competitive examination, the National Veterinary Corps, attached to the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA), where he has developed his professional career.
