The Indonesian Government plans to complete the Red and White Fishing Villages project in 65 locations this year, with the aim of improving the welfare of coastal communities.

This initiative will help modernize, develop, and economically empower traditional coastal fishing communities, and it will be implemented gradually and completed within two years.

"Currently, it is at around 20–30%. Hopefully, by the end of the year, we can finish it," detailed the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Sakti Wahyu Trenggono.

The project includes the installation of docks, fish markets, cold storage facilities, ice plants, repair workshops, logistics centers, and fuel stations, among others.

The Government has formally declared its intention to strengthen the country's marine and fisheries sector through the Fishing Village program. The program consists of a village inhabited by approximately 2,000 fishers that is being reorganized and equipped with adequate infrastructure.

According to Indonesia's current president, Prabowo Subianto, fishers' incomes increased by 100% after approximately two years, thanks to basic facilities such as ice supply and fish auction facilities. Moreover, fish auction facilities allow fishers to sell fresh fish directly at better prices.

In October 2025, Indonesia held the workshop 'Promotion of Decision Support Systems (DSS) Using Digital Data to Support the Management of Small Pelagic Fisheries in the APEC Region' to promote international cooperation on sustainable fisheries management.
