Oman will have its first-ever fish farm that uses Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) technology, according to Zawya, the online business and financial news site for the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region.
The pilot project, being built in Al Musannah in the South Al Batinah Governorate, has a capacity of 8 tonnes and will focus on the farming of sea bream.
This initiative has been implemented by the Aquaculture Development Center at the Ministry’s Directorate General of Fisheries Research with funding from the Ministry’s Agricultural and Fisheries Development Fund, Zawya details.
Finally, the aquaculture specialist at the Aquaculture Centre, Adel al Balushi, hopes that from now on the cultivation of diverse fish species in sustainable farms will increase as the interest in sustainable aquaculture within the fishing community and among entrepreneurs.
Fisheries Development Oman SOAC (FDO), a fisheries investment arm of the Oman Investment Authority (OIA), signed in October 2024 a consultancy contract with aquaculture consulting and development firm AquaBioTech Group.
Therefore, the Sultanate wants to support the aquaculture and fisheries sector to stimulate and develop large-scale sustainable projects, both locally and globally.
Some strategic aquaculture projects have already become a reality in the Arab country, such as Sea Bream farming in cages with Blue Waters LLC, semi-intensive shrimp farms in the South Al Sharqiyah governorate, and the construction of a fishing port in Duqm.
