The Irish Marine Institute, Ireland’s national agency for marine research and policy, has a new chair, with the appointment of legal and regulatory expert Martin Sisk to the role.

Ireland’s Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Martin Heydon said he was “very pleased” with the decision, noting that Sisk “brings exceptional skills in corporate governance and business leadership, as well as knowledge and drive to this critically important role.”

Irish Minister of State for Fisheries and Marine Timmy Dooley also welcomed the appointment, highlighting Mr Sisk’s “distinguished record in governance, regulatory affairs, and public service” and saying it would benefit the Institute’s work in marine science, fisheries and the blue economy

According to the Marine Institute, Sisk has over 25 years’ experience in regulatory and business roles. A qualified solicitor, he previously held senior positions at the Central Bank of Ireland and as Registrar of Friendly Societies. Other past roles include chairing VHI Healthcare and the Irish Auditing and Accounting Supervisory Authority, as well as serving as interim chair of the State Examinations Commission in 2024. He is currently a board member of Drogheda Port Company.

“I am honoured to be appointed as Chairperson to the Marine Institute, an organisation that plays a vital role in supporting the sustainable development of Ireland’s marine resources through science, research, and innovation,” Sisk said in a press statement.

Marine Institute chief executive Dr Rick Officer described Sisk as bringing “a wealth of experience and insight to the role” and said his leadership would be instrumental in delivering scientific advice to support Ireland’s marine resources.

As Ireland’s national agency for marine research and policy support, the Marine Institute provides advice and services to government, industry and other stakeholders on the sustainable development of the State’s maritime resources. Its headquarters are in Oranmore, County Galway, with additional facilities in Newport, County Mayo, and at several ports.

The Marine Institute recently announced marine scientist Dr Glenn Nolan is its new Director of Marine Environment and Food Safety Services at the organisation, overseeing teams working in fish health, environmental chemistry, shellfish safety, quality control, benthos science, licensing advisory services and marine spatial planning - making his role particularly significant for Ireland's aquaculture and seafood sectors.
