With operations in 26 countries and a workforce of 11,600 employees, in 2024, Mowi is celebrating 60 years of leadership in the salmon industry, consolidated not only as the world's largest producer but also as the most sustainable.

Mowi did it again. The Norwegian salmon giant has been ranked the No. 1 animal protein producer by the Coller FAIRR Protein Producer Index for the sixth consecutive year. The company has consistently achieved top scores in the Index since its inception.
The Coller FAIRR Protein Producer Index was established in 2018 to address the knowledge gap in the sustainability risks associated with the food sector. It is the most detailed assessment of the world's largest meat, dairy, and aquaculture companies, and recognition of its value has increasingly grown, as has its impact in driving engagement with leading protein producers and supporting investors in the sector.
Designed to provide financial institutions with best-in-class data, analytics, and trends in the protein sector that they can integrate into their investment decisions and engagement strategies, rankings are determined by a risk and opportunity score across critical environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues.
The index evaluates 60 of the world's largest publicly traded protein companies on the basis of 10 sustainability factors. These include one opportunity (alternative proteins) and nine risks (greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation and biodiversity loss, water use and scarcity, waste and pollution, antibiotics use, working conditions, animal welfare, food safety, and sustainability governance).
Mowi - which is often joined in the top-ranked companies by other salmon producers - claimed that its leadership in the rankings since its inception is due to its robust policies on responsible sourcing, animal welfare, and environmental sustainability.
The company, which, according to its latest results report, closed Q3 2024 with record figures in harvest volumes and operating revenues, said at its September Capital Markets Day that its goal for 2029 is for both to grow. To this end, its strategy for the next five years will be based on three pillars: volume growth, competitive costs, and, of course, sustainability.
Last year, when Mowi topped the Coller FAIRR Protein Producer Index for the fifth time, CEO Ivan Vindheim said this showed again that "Mowi is at the forefront of sustainable food production." At the time, the company's Chief Sustainability and Technology Officer, Catarina Martins, added: "Our ultimate goal is to unlock the potential of the ocean to produce more food for a growing world population in a way that respects our planet."
After learning of this year's result, Martins emphasized the same idea. "Mowi's relentless pursuit of excellence and sustainable practices has earned us the top spot in the FAIRR rating for the sixth consecutive year, underscoring our vision of Leading the Blue Revolution," she said. "Every day, we are dedicated to producing more healthy and sustainable food from the ocean."
"This year, we proudly maintained our leading position among the 60 largest global meat, dairy, and aquaculture companies on ten material themes aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals," she pointed out, and concluded by thanking "every Mowi employee for making this possible."
Earlier this year TIME magazine also listed Mowi as one of the 500 Most Sustainable Companies by 2024, highlighting its corporate responsibility and sustainable practices.
