The Ministry of Production (PRODUCE) in Peru has established the jumbo flying squid or pota (Dosidicus gigas) catch quota for the year 2024 at 499,683 tons, after Peruvian Sea Institute (IMARPE) recommendation.
Therefore, the sustainability of the resource is ensured, benefiting thousands of families who depend on this fishery, according to Ministerial Resolution No. 000222-2024-PRODUCE and subject to IMARPE's advice.
PRODUCE will conclude extraction activities when the catch quota is reached or estimated to be reached, or when IMARPE recommends it due to environmental or biological circumstances. Ultimately, the activities will conclude on December 31, 2024.
To protect the jumbo flying squid, PRODUCE has approved conservation and management measures for extraction activities in the high seas.
For example, peruvian artisanal fishing vessels must submit the artisanal catch and effort registration form to IMARPE professionals at authorized landing points. Thus, it ensures precise monitoring of catches and the sustainable use of the resource.
Regarding these measures, Minister of Production Sergio González Guerrero said: "These actions not only seek to preserve the resource but also promote responsible and equitable fishing, fostering the economic stability of fishing communities."
"The established quota responds to a rigorous scientific assessment and reflects PRODUCE's commitment to sustainability and conservation of marine resources," he concluded.
