The Indian Council of Agricultural Research - Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture (ICAR-CIBA) and marine-based products supplier BRC Marine Products have initiated a collaboration to find new feed options for shrimp.
Through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), both entities will evaluate rice distillers' dried grains with solubles (DDGS) as an alternative protein source in shrimp feed.
Rice distillers' dried grains with solubles (DDGS) are used in poultry and cattle feed and are now being explored in aquaculture. This will replace more expensive protein sources, such as soybean meal, and provide essential amino acids and vitamins for shrimp growth.
Dr. Kuldeep Kumar Lal, Director of ICAR-CIBA, emphasized "the need for sustainable protein alternatives to meet the growing demand for shrimp production while reducing environmental impact."
Additionally, S.N. Yadav, representative of BRC Marine Products, noted that "incorporating rice DDGS in shrimp feed could help reduce feed costs and support the industry's shift toward more sustainable practices."
