According to data obtained by IFFO - The Marine Ingredients Organisation, cumulative fish oil production through November 2024 increased by only 3%. Additionally, reduced production in other regions nearly offset the gains recorded in Peru.
It is also worth mentioning that the United States and African countries saw better cumulative fish oil production during the January to November 2024 period.
Regarding fishmeal production, it increased by nearly 16% compared to the same period in 2023. The organization attributes this growth to the accumulated supply from Peru.
In the North-Central region of the South American country, the 2.51 million metric tons quota for the second fishing season has already surpassed 85% to date. Operations in the southern region have yet to be accounted for.
The data obtained by IFFO comes from its members, who represent 55% of the global marine ingredients production: (Peru, Chile, Denmark-Norway, Iceland-North Atlantic, the USA, Ivory Coast, Mauritius, South Africa, and Spain).
China's fishmeal production in 2024
The annual use of fishmeal in aquafeed in China in 2024 has experienced a recovery compared to 2023, as has the overall production of aquafeed.
However, due to weaker performance in the first three quarters, total domestic aquafeed production in 2024 is expected to fall short of the volumes recorded the previous year.
Latest reports published from IFFO in January 2024, covering key nations representing 55% of global fishmeal and fish oil production, already revealed a concerning downward trend.
