Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute
The Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR-CMFRI) in India, in collaboration with the Department of Fisheries, Government of Andhra Pradesh, has successfully installed artificial reefs (ARs) off the coast of Visakhapatnam, located in the eastern part of the country.
This initiative is part of the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) program and aims to strengthen marine ecosystems and enhance the region's fishery resources.
The deployment ceremony was attended by Shri Kinjarapu Atchannaidu, Minister of Agriculture, Co-operation, Marketing, Animal Husbandry, Dairy Development & Fisheries, Government of Andhra Pradesh, along with other officials, leaders of fisheries associations, and members of the media.
Dr. Joe K. Kizhakudan, Principal Scientist and Head of the CMFRI Visakhapatnam Centre, together with his team of scientists, was responsible for identifying the suitable sites for installation.
The Minister emphasized the work done by ICAR-CMFRI in promoting marine cage culture, seaweed farming, and the deployment of artificial reefs. He also highlighted the importance of these technologies in increasing fishers’ incomes and developing sustainable marine fisheries.
