The total mackerel landing in Chile during 2024 reached 1.1 million tons, representing a 26,9% increase compared to the same period in 2023, according to figures released by the Undersecretariat of Fisheries (Subpesca) through the Department of Sectoral Analysis.

The main landing area was between the regions of Valparaíso and Los Lagos, totaling 889,5 thousand tons, marking a 26,1% increase compared to the same period in 2023.

The mackerel fishery in Chile has a scientific technical committee and a management committee, as well as a plan to reduce bycatch and incidental capture, particularly between the regions of Valparaíso and Los Lagos.

During the 13th Annual Meeting of the South Pacific Regional Fisheries Organization, the mackerel quota for 2025 will be set for Chile and the other 17 countries that are part of this organization. Currently, Chile holds 66% of the quota for this resource.

Subpesca has just approved 57 projects to be carried out under the research program for the regulation of fisheries and aquaculture in 2025. The projects will be executed by the Fisheries Development Institute (IFOP) and will focus on economic, fisheries, and aquaculture areas.
