After filing several appeals, Norway-based aquaculture company Amar Seafood has received approval for the construction of its halibut farm in the municipality of Frøya.
This is a significant development as Amar expands its production to new areas. With three licenses totaling 2,340 tons, the Norwegian company increases its production capacity while improving equipment and technology.
Regarding this project, the CCO Seafood of Amar Group, Anders Sæther, said: "It's exciting to see a new species being introduced to Frøya, a municipality known for its aquaculture expertise. We have brought together a unique team with over 100 years of combined experience in farming salmon and other marine species. Together with a good location with the right current, temperature, and ideal protection, this provides the perfect foundation for halibut farming in Norway."
In 2022, Amar Group acquired Halibut PEI, a land-based, closed-contained halibut farming operation located in Prince Edward Island, Canada. At that time, the Group had already indicated that it planned to build on its experience with Atlantic wolffish and halibut farming in Canada and Norway.
