The City Council of El Puerto de Santa María, Cádiz, Spain has approved the urban planning license for the construction of a seriola (yellowtail) fattening at the Left Commercial Dock of the port area.

The project, led by the company Acuicultura Cádiz EME-450.1, has a budget of €5,128,816.87 and will be completed within 21 months. The center will use seawater recirculation technology (RAS), a clean and non-polluting method to produce up to 450 tons annually.

In addition, the facilities will include water tanks, technical areas, warehouses, offices, laboratories, changing rooms, restrooms, and an apartment for 24/7 plant surveillance.

"This is excellent news that will result in employment and wealth, serving as a strategic hub for innovation and sustainable growth," said the mayor of the city, Germán Beardo.

Challenges: Modernizing and digitalizing the aquaculture sector

In 2024, Spain announced the implementation of an aid line of 40 million euros for the modernization of the fishing and aquaculture processing sector. The European Commission gave the go-ahead to this line of aid to the Spanish sector previously excluded from EU recovery plans.

The funds of EUR 40 million in aid will promote the modernization of the sector to increase the added value of the products, thus making it more resilient to current and future challenges.
