For the first time, a seafood seminar will be held in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), organized by the Norwegian Embassy and the Norwegian Seafood Council (NSC).

Norway aims to address the simplification of conditions for exporting and importing Norwegian seafood to the African country. Additionally, the seminar will serve as a meeting point for Norwegian exporters and importers from the DRC.

"DRC Congo aims to increase the farming of local fish and is therefore looking for information and knowledge about how aquaculture is organized and regulated in Norway," expressed the Norwegian Seafood Council's envoy to Africa, Johnny Håberg.

Moreover, the Nordic country will showcase how it manages aquaculture and related industries, and what can be useful for its application in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Regarding this initiative, Norway's ambassador to DRC, Odd Mølster said: "This is where Norwegian exporters and local importers will meet representatives of the authorities and discuss their plans."

"Exports to this country are challenging, so the seminar is therefore an opportunity for Norwegian exporters, authorities and local authorities to discuss a simplification of the import regulations," Håberg concluded.

Norwegian seafood presence in Africa

Over the past five years, Norwegian seafood exports to Africa have risen to nearly 2 billion kroner. The main markets are Egypt, Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Congo Brazzaville, Ghana, and Morocco.

Precisely, NSC hired Johnny Håberg as its new seafood envoy to Africa who started in the summer of 2024. He returns to the Council nearly a decade after being the envoy to Brazil from 2010 to 2015.

"This is a continent that undoubtedly has a bright future and will offer great opportunities for the Norwegian seafood industry in the years to come," Håberg assured.
