Secret Smokehouse has become the the first fish curing and smoking smokehouse in the world to obtain certification as a B Corporation (or B Corp).

B Lab certifies companies that meet the "highest" standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability alongside a commitment to goals beyond shareholder value.

Thanks to the commitment to land-based salmon farming, and thus leading another step in its journey to lead sustainable practices in the industry, this achievement has been made possible.

The certification involves the areas of Governance, Workers, Community, Environment and Customers. Companies need to reach a score of 80 points in the B Impact Assessment.

At the same time, they must provide evidence of responsible practices relating to energy supplies, waste and water use, worker compensation, diversity, and corporate transparency.

Regarding this achievement, Max Bergius, Founder and Owner of Secret Smokehouse, said: "It is a great testament to our commitment and hard work into doing business differently. With this move, we hope we can inspire others to put their ESG's on top of their agenda and help us improve the industry practises as well as educate consumers."

On the other hand, Executive Director of B Lab UK, Chris Turner, noted: "Welcoming Secret Smokehouse is an exciting moment for the fish smoking and curing industry. B Lab UK and the rest of the B Corp community are really pleased that Secret Smokehouse is paving the way for a new way of doing things."

About B Corporation certification

B Lab began in 2006 with the idea that a different kind of economy was not only possible, but necessary — and that business could lead the way towards a new, stakeholder-driven model.

It became known for certifying B Corporations, which are companies that meet high standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency.

Secret Smokehouse is now part of a growing community of over 8,000 businesses globally that have certified as B Corps. The B Corp community in the UK is one of the largest and fastest-growing in the world, with over 1,700 companies spanning a range of different industries and sizes.
