One of Australia's leading salmon and ocean trout producers, Petuna, has signed an agreement with Ace Aquatec to deploy its innovative underwater cameras in some of Tasmania’s most challenging conditions.
Petuna operates in the Tamar River estuary at Rowella and in Macquarie Harbour, both of which are known for housing fish adapted to local environments and for their tannin-rich waters with very low light levels.
Despite low-light conditions, Ace Aquatec's A-BIOMASS® camera has outperformed in multiple trials, delivering 99.17% accuracy and measuring over 8,000 fish in a single day — compared to just 300 fish through traditional manual sampling.
"By combining artificial intelligence with non-invasive monitoring, producers can make more informed decisions, which brings significant benefits for both fish welfare and farm operational efficiency," said Ace Aquatec CEO Nathan Pyne-Carter.
Also, Stuart Atherton, Fish Performance Manager at Petuna, noted: "To have a system that can report the weight of the fish using a non-invasive method will allow us to keep a much better eye on the health and welfare of the animals, not to mention improvements in the working environment for our employees."
In collaboration with CAS Australasia, specializing in control and automation solutions, Ace Aquatec has established local technical support to provide rapid assistance for any hardware, repair, or maintenance needs.
In August, the aquaculture technology company already confirmed that the five species-specific modules developed for its AI-powered A-BIOMASS® underwater camera are achieving strong results.
