Canadian family-owned aquaculture company Springhills Fish has announced that its co-owner, RJ Taylor, has been appointed to the board of Agricultural Research & Innovation Ontario (ARIO), becoming the first fish farmer to hold this position.

Until now, ARIO, founded in 1962, had primarily focused on agricultural research. From now on, this public agency of the Ontario government, also known as a Crown agency, will be responsible for advancing aquaculture research and innovation.

The Springhills co-owner spent years dedicated to science outreach and advocacy, working with organizations like the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics. Moreover, he serves on the board at the Livestock Research Innovation Corporation, focusing on research, farming, and community building.

"Fish farmers face many of the same challenges as others in agriculture, yet we're often left swimming upstream when it comes to recognition and funding. This board appointment is a sign that things are changing. Aquaculture is gaining the recognition it deserves, and we're excited to see where this momentum takes us," Springhills' statement reads.

About Springhills Fish

Springhills Fish is a second-generation family business run by siblings Arlen and RJ Taylor. Its parents, Jim and Lynette Taylor, opened our first fish farm in 1995, and over the years, they have expanded to several farm sites and a processing facility in Grey County in Ontario, Canada.

The Springhills family raises rainbow trout, coho salmon, and Arctic char at its eco-friendly farms in Grey County and Manitoulin Island on Ontario, Canada. It also partners with other Canadian fishers and farmers for more variety, such as wild-caught pickerel, smoked trout, nuggets, and shrimp.
