The National Fishermen's Association (NEKMAT) in Malaysia has included white shrimp farming in its aquaculture project in Badong this year, further strengthening the country's aquaculture industry, according to the National News Agency of Malaysia (BERNAMA).
Meanwhile, the General Manager of NEKMAT, Azrin Shah Ismail, confirmed that white shrimp farming will be carried out in four ponds and has already produced 18 tonnes of white shrimp.
Also, he confirmed that NEKMAT plans to increase production by adding 10 more ponds, with a target production of 120,000 kilograms per year, generating sales worth approximately RM3 million (almost 700,000 US dollars).
Moreover, BERNAMA reported that, according to the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, this initiative, carried out in collaboration with the Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority (LKIM), has received an investment of RM3 million.
Finally, the Minister assured that although some coastal areas have been converted for other developments, Malaysia's fish self-sufficiency ratio (SSR) has now exceeded 90%, largely supported by aquaculture.
"We will prioritize aquaculture in areas where fishermen face difficulties going to sea, such as Perlis, Penang, Melaka, and Negeri Sembilan. While they continue fishing, we also want to encourage them to take part in aquaculture programs," he stated in remarks provided by the news agency.
In March 2025, the UK Government's research and innovation funding body UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) announced a £12 million funding programme aimed at supporting sustainable and resilient aquaculture systems across Malaysia and other south-east Asian countries.
