The Ministry of Production (PRODUCE) in Peru will provide training to more than 600 artisanal fishermen with the course 'MAM 010: Accredited Experienced Artisanal Fishing Sailor' to strengthen the artisanal fishing sector.

Through this course, attendees will obtain the Artisanal Fisher Card. With this card, fishermen will have access to job opportunities and incentives offered by the Peruvian state, such as loans with very competitive interest rates.

Additionally, the Minister of PRODUCE, Sergio González Guerrero, detailed that the course will be taught in four regions: Piura, Lima, Arequipa, and La Libertad. Piura will be the only location offering it face-to-face.

On the other hand, in the Puno region, individuals can access the 'MAM 206: Lake Captain' course. "This course is a requirement for artisanal fishermen in lacustrine environments to formalize and strengthen their fishing operations with principles of sustainability while preserving the environment," González explained.

More activities and courses

During July, the National Fund for Fisheries Development (FONDEPES) offers 36 training activities, 22 formalization course activities, 13 Technical-Productive courses, and the Safety of Human Life course. These activities will take place in a total of 11 regions.

Some of these scheduled courses are 'Hygiene, Handling, and Preservation of Fishery Resources' and 'Good Practices for Handling and Release of Sea Turtles and Other Incidental Fishing Species'.

Furthermore, PRODUCE announced last week the distribution of 26 credits to fishing communities in various locations to promote the development of artisanal fishing.
