The Ministry of Production in Peru (PRODUCE) has distributed 26 credits to fishing communities in various locations to promote the development of artisanal fishing.

Through the National Fund for Fisheries Development (FONDEPES), the accumulated credit amount totals 546,553 Peruvian soles for artisanal fishermen in Piura and Tumbes.

In Piura, fishermen from El Ñuro, Máncora, Talara, Paita, and Sechura have been among the beneficiaries of this financial support. Meanwhile, in Tumbes, recipients belong to the communities of Cancas and Acapulco.

"The government is committed to providing accessible financial support to artisanal fishermen so they can have boats in better conditions and equipment that allow them to carry out their activities more easily," stated Minister Sergio González Guerrero.

FONDEPES credits finance the acquisition of goods and services aimed at improving the productivity of artisanal fishermen. They offer the most competitive interest rates in the market and a repayment period of up to 36 months, with a grace period of up to six months for artisanal fishing.

"Just in June, at the national level, FONDEPES has disbursed over 2.5 million Peruvian soles in supervised credits to artisanal fishermen and aquaculturists. The goal by the end of the year is to exceed 15.3 million Peruvian soles," added the PRODUCE minister.

Additionally, PRODUCE launched in May an assistance program to train over 300 artisanal fishermen in Paita, Sechura, and Talara in the Piura region, as well as in Lambayeque and Tumbes.
