The Minister of Production (Produce) in Peru, Sergio González, confirmed during the presentation of the 2025 budget law in the Congress of the Republic that the fishing sector and micro and small enterprises (MYPE) will receive S/ 895 million (approximately nearly $239M).

In this way, Produce will strengthen the fishing, aquaculture, and industry sectors, contributing to the economic and social development of the country.

He also confirmed the construction of a new scientific vessel: "The investment amounts to S/ 215 million ($57.33M), and we have already signed the agreement with the Industrial Services of the Navy (SIMA), in addition to making the first transfer of approximately S/ 50 million ($13.33M)."

With this budget there are also plans to invest in measures to address illegal fishing. For example, new regulations that would allow the Navy to acquire patrol boats and fund surveys related to innovation and artisanal fishing.

Investments distribution

Produce will invest more than S/ 42 million ($11.2M) for the implementation of infrastructure and equipment for the remaining work balances of the Pucallpa Amazonian Fisheries CITE and the Ahuashiyaku Aquaculture Fisheries CITE.

The Center for Productive Innovation and Technological Transfer (CITE) are institutions created to promote innovation, technological transfer, and business development in various regions and productive sectors.

Additionally, S/ 64 million ($17.07M) has been allocated for the improvement of the Provincial Directorate of Agriculture of Huarmey, works at the fishing docks of Paita (Piura), Supe, Faro Matarani (Arequipa), and La Cruz (Tumbes), and the completion of three technical files (Faro Matarani, Arequipa; La Cruz, Tumbes; and La Planchada, Arequipa).

In November, Produce has granted 106 environmental certifications to investment projects totaling over S /400 million (approximately USD 105.26 million).

Assistance for fishermen and aquaculturists

Within this amount, there is also room for assisted loans to artisanal fishermen and aquaculturists.

"These loans, with symbolic interest rates of 1%, are aimed at improving, for example, the fishermen's boats, engine replacements, and, in the case of aquaculturists, the purchase of balanced feed, which represents 70% of the cost of the production chain," González assured.

Finally, a revolving fund has been created for the Fisheries and Aquaculture Development Fund (FONDEPES), which will allow the resources allocated for loans to be reused.

"As fishermen and aquaculturists repay the loans, these resources will be reassigned to other productive units, both in the fishing and aquaculture sectors," concluded the minister.
