The Association of Fisheries Producers' Organizations of the Cantabrian Sea, also known as the “OPPs del Cantábrico,” aims to highlight the value of the small pelagic fish caught by its fleet (anchovy, mackerel, horse mackerel, sardine, and bogue) as the perfect ingredient to improve health and complement the Atlantic diet.

In addition to being rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, small pelagic fish also stand out for their high-quality protein content and their supply of vitamins A, D, and B-group vitamins, which strengthen the immune system, improve bone health, and support energy metabolism. Lastly, they also contain minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, and selenium, which contribute to the proper functioning of the body.

"Consuming small pelagic fish means choosing a balanced, natural, and sustainable diet that cares for both our health and the marine resources we depend on," the organization states.

At the last AECOC Seafood Products Congress, held in Baiona (Galicia) and organized by the Association of Manufacturers and Distributors, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food (MAPA) took the opportunity to advocate for product traceability to encourage fish consumption.

Furthermore, the Association of National Fisheries Producer Organizations in Spain, Pesca España, signed an agreement worth €90,000 with MAPA to promote the consumption of fishery products during 2025 and 2026.

During 2025, activities have been focused on the relationship between fish and sports, highlighting the benefits and properties of seafood in promoting healthy lifestyle habits.
