The Ecuadorian shrimp sector has offered its support to the government of the country to maintain dialogue with U.S. authorities and continue working in coordination with the private sector to restore the conditions before the new Trump tariffs.
The United States will impose tariffs with a base rate of 10% for all countries (including Ecuador), as well as higher tariffs for other shrimp-producing nations, such as 26% on India, 32% on Indonesia, 46% on Vietnam, and 36% on Thailand.
For this reason, the Executive President of the National Chamber of Aquaculture (CNA), José Antonio Camposano, has stated: "At first glance, we have a comparative advantage over our competitors. However, it is necessary to work towards restoring the previous conditions, as the tariffs could affect shrimp consumption in the United States."
Additionally, the Ecuadorian shrimp sector urges continuous monitoring of how these tariffs could affect shrimp consumption in the U.S. market, as well as the response from competitors.
According to the CNA, the United States is the second most important market for Ecuadorian shrimp, accounting for between 18% and 20% of its total exports.
Moreover, the shrimp sector is the main generator of foreign exchange for Ecuador, with exports reaching USD 6 billion in 2025 and generating over 300,000 direct and indirect jobs.
The Ministry of Production, Foreign Trade, Investments, and Fisheries, along with the CNA, reported in October 2024 that U.S. legislation was not going to impose sanctions on shrimp exports for not reaching the minimum dumping threshold of 2%.
The U.S. Department of Commerce initiated an investigation on October 25, 2023, regarding the alleged use of subsidies and dumping of shrimp imports into the country. The process involved investigating the main exporting companies.
"This is a milestone in public-private cooperation for the defense of exports and job creation in Ecuador," The Ministry expressed.
