    How to Have a Successful Job Interview – Before the Interview

    So you were able to optimize your resume, applied to several job openings, and finally landed a job interview. What’s next? What measures should you take in order to have a successful job interview?

    This could either be your first interview ever or your first interview in quite some time. We need to be sure and certain that we will have a successful experience. That’s why today I will walk you through some of the steps and actions you should always keep in mind.

    Let’s be honest, sometimes we apply for a job opening even if we don’t check all the bullets of requirements. And that is okay, I will talk about that in another blog post. However, it is important when preparing for our job interview we go back to that job description. We should thoroughly examine all the aspects and requirements included in it.

    The reason behind this is not only to make sure we highlight our strengths in those we ace but to also have in mind any questions that may surface and are relevant for our decision-making. This is the first step in making sure you will answer correctly any challenge that could be done to your skills throughout the interview.

    Learn More About the Company

    Just as they will be evaluating you, you will need to evaluate them in order to make your decision. Go into their website and learn what their values are. Find out what their company’s organizational culture is like. Studying the company will provide an understanding of their goals and plans.

    Look for reviews on LinkedIn, Facebook, Indeed, Glassdoor. Learn about former and current employees’ experiences. Also, try and found out about the company’s growth in the last 5-10 years. Learn about their competitors and potential competitors. You need to have a broad understanding of the company and its processes to make sure you want to further your relationship with them.

    Having this knowledge in the interview will yield to a deeper conversation about them and show you’re interested. Not only in winning this interview, but in having a long and strong relationship

    Review Our Past Experiences

    In my experience, every recruiting and hiring process is a sales opportunity in every way and step. But especially for the person being interviewed. During the interview, you need to be able to advertise your skills and background. And always link them back to the job and the company you are applying to.

    This part of the hiring process also helps the interviewer evaluate your communication skills as well as your ability to summarize all relevant information. To prepare for this part you should always go through the “review your application” and “learn more about the company” steps.

    Dress for Success

    It may sound a bit trite, but it is indeed key to a successful job interview. Even though your skills and knowledge should speak for themselves, we are a cluster of first impressions. You can always ask your recruiter when they call you for interview confirmation if the company has a dress code.

    You don’t need to wear expensive clothes as long as your clothes are clean and suit you well. And of course, they help you look professional, make you feel comfortable, and give you a confidence boost. Do not make the decision of what you are going to wear at the last minute. Have them laid out so you make sure there aren’t undesired wrinkles or stains.

    Time is of the Essence

    Still on the “first impressions” page, you need to arrive at the right time. You don’t want to arrive late, it may result in a bad sentence for your interview. The “correct” unspoken norm as to how early should we arrive at a job interview is 15 minutes top. More than that can transmit the wrong message to your interviewer as they may be involved in other duties and tasks.

    When making arrangements for your interview always make sure to get a form of direct contact with your interviewer. You will need this in case something unexpected happens that may delay your arrival at your appointment. If anything arises that may cause a delay or cancellation, let the interviewer know you are open to rescheduling.
