Bakkafrost Q2 harvest rises overall despite challenges in its Scottish operations

The Faroese salmon farmer's trading update for the second quarter shows its Faroe Islands harvest volume jumped by almost 57% year-on-year.

Faroes-headquartered salmon farming company Bakkafrost has released is trading update for the second quarter of 2025, reporting it has harvested a total of 23,000 tonnes of salmon in Q2.

Of this total, 16,000 tonnes came from its operations in the Faroe Islands, an increase of almost 57% compared with last year's 10,200 tonnes. Meanwhile, Bakkafrost harvested 7,000 tonnes from its Scottish operations, a drop of 39% compared to the same period last year, which achieved 11,400 tonnes.

In its update released on 2 July, the company also provided average fish weights for Q2 2025, reporting 5.0 kg in the Faroe Islands and 5.9 kg in Scotland. Incident-based mortality costs were estimated at 27 million DKK (approx. €3.62m / $4.27m) for the Scottish segment, while no such costs were recorded in the Faroese operations.

Smolt releases during the quarter totalled 5.4 million in the Faroe Islands and 0.9 million in Scotland.

Meanwhile, in its fishmeal, oil and feed segment (FOF), Bakkafrost sourced 159,500 tonnes of marine raw materials during Q2 2025, a significant increase from the 90,600 tonnes recorded in the same period last year.

Feed sales also rose to 37,500 tonnes, up from 32,900 tonnes in Q2 2024. Sales of fishmeal totalled 9,000 tonnes, while no fish oil sales were reported for the quarter.

The company’s full second-quarter results for 2025 are scheduled to be released on 26 August.
