First large-scale RAS nursery for striped bass

Pacifico Aquaculture has commissioned Billund Aquaculture to design and implement a Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) project for its new land-based hatchery and nursery, which will be the first in the world to produce striped bass (Morone saxatilis) at scale.

Billund Aquaculture is embarking on the construction of the world's first large-scale Recirculation Aquaculture Systems (RAS) nursery for striped bass in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico. The facility aims to produce 8 million striped bass juveniles annually, setting a milestone in land-based hatchery and nursery development.

This groundbreaking project, the brainchild of Pacifico Aquaculture, known for its dedicated pure breed striped bass, signifies a significant leap in Baja California's aquaculture industry. Pacifico's CEO, Per-Roar Gjerde, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration with Billund, stating it marks a pivotal moment for Pacifico's growth, creating a new industry in the region.

The land-based farm, set to start construction in January 2024, boasts a total area of 9,250 m2, featuring 17 intensive-RAS units equipped with fix-bed biofilter technology. The project is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2025, with a focus on meeting the increasing global demand for healthy seafood.

Marcelo Varela, CEO of Billund Aquaculture Chile, highlighted the significance of this contract, emphasizing its importance in diversifying RAS-farmed species and entering the promising Mexican market.
