From May 12-14, IFFO, The Marine Ingredients Organisation, will gather its members in Spain's capital, Madrid. For three days, scientists and industry experts will explore the latest developments in feed ingredients, feed formulations, and the growing strategic role of marine ingredients.
Likewise, updates on agri-commodities, fish oil, fishmeal, insect-based ingredients, and omega-3 will also be presented, along with country and regional analyses. In addition, two side events will address precision nutrition and certification programs.
"Our programme will continue with themes from our Lisbon Conference, with a macro review of the key sectors, such as aquaculture, feed, omega-3, and petfood," IFFO Director General Petter Martin Johannessen wrote in his welcome letter to attendees, published on The Marine Ingredients Organisation website.
Entitled 'IFFO: InFocus Workshop on Precision Nutrition for Aquaculture', the side event opening the meeting will explore the rapidly developing area of precision nutrition in aquaculture feeds. It will cover topics such as the important role of palatability, omega, and amino acids formulation, and the latest digital tools to design and assess feed formulations.
Moderated by IFFO's Technical Director, Brett Glencross, who will also act as a speaker, among the scientists and experts who will participate as speakers along with him, will be Dr. Kyla Zatti, senior scientist in BioMar's Global R&D team, responsible for the study with which the aquafeed company demonstrated that full replacement of fish oil with algae oil in salmon feed is possible.
The second side event, to be held on the 13th, is entitled 'How recognition between standards can drive responsible supply and market access'. It will explore how seafood certification programs work together to increase the volume of certified ingredients in aquaculture.
Hosted by MarinTrust - whose CEO, Francisco Aldon will moderate -, this event will show how recognition between standards can increase efficiency, market access, and provide assurance to the value chain. Speakers will include Jeff Regnart, Programme Manager at Responsible Fisheries Management (RFM); Dan James, President & CEO of Kodiak Fishmeal Company, and Dan Lee, Program Integrity Advisor at the Global Seafood Alliance (GSA).
Both optional side events will be held in the evenings, to offer attendees more options. They will take place in English, but live translation will be available through IFFO's Wordly App.
Regarding the Market Forum, the first day will focus on market supply, covering agri-commodities markets (Rabobank), insects for feed and food (IPIFF), microplastics (Aquaspin), and the latest on IMO (International Maritime Organisation) Regulations.
Discussions will also include IFFO's global overview of marine ingredient supply, as well as regional and country updates from Europe, the U.S., Chile, and Peru. The organizers noted that these are accessible only to premium members and producers of The Marine Ingredients Organisation.
The second day, for its part, will focus on market demand drivers, exploring the demand for seafood ingredients in animal farming. FAO's Audun Lem will provide a macro perspective on the challenges and opportunities facing the seafood industry, followed by an analysis of trends in aquaculture (Kontali Analyse AS), and then perspectives from a feed producer (De Heus Animal Nutrition B.V) and a feed formulation expert (Wittaya Aqua).
IFFO will also provide updates on China, petfood (C&D Foods), fish oil (Marex Global Sourcing), and will end with a focus on omega-3 markets (GOED) and omega-3 fish nutrition (Nofima).
The two days will be held in the morning so that those interested can also attend the side events organized in the afternoons. For those interested in knowing the agenda in more detail, please click here. Registration is open until May 2, 2025.
